Summer Schools

Pulsations Along Stellar Evolution, 11 - 22 November 2019, La Plata, Argentina

Based on the powerful tools provided by asteroseismology and the new generation of satellites (Kepler, BRITE, and upcoming missions such as TESS and PLATO) combined with ground-based surveys (e.g., ASAS, KELT) delivering long-term photometric observations with high precision, the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram is nowadays populated almost completely with instability domains, meaning that almost all stars across the HR diagram pulsate in specific modes. The excitation of stellar oscillations strongly depends on the physical processes within the star as well as on the internal stellar structure. Observable oscillation frequencies can further be modified by stellar rotation and magnetic fields. Identifying and analyzing stellar pulsation frequencies hence provide the only means to investigate in great detail and with high precision, the physics of stars in all mass ranges and throughout their entire lifetime.

The aim of this Summer School is to train the next generation of researchers in the field of stellar pulsations and to sensitize them for the importance of asteroseismology for our understanding of stellar structure and the evolution of stars.

The school is aimed at PhD students, but early-career post-docs or late-stage under-graduate students can apply as well, provided that their main research field lies within the school's subjects. The school will be divided into theoretical and practical courses.

Stellar Winds and Outflows, 3-15 September 2023, Harrachov, Czech Republic

Stars lose mass via winds. Depending on the initial mass of the star, these winds might play a minor or a major role for the evolution of the star. The more massive and metal rich the star, the more pronounced is its loss of material throughout the evolution by powerful winds. During the last few decades new stellar wind solutions have been discovered that deepened our understanding of this important mass-loss mechanism.

Stars can also experience mass outflows in form of ejecta. Such ejecta occur already in the very early stages when the stars are still in their accretion processes. But also evolved stars can display signs of mass ejections and outbursts. Known evolutionary phases with outflows and ejections are, for example, planetary nebulae, luminous blue variables, yellow hypergiants, and Wolf-Rayet stars.

This school addresses advanced Master and PhD students. The subject of the school is devoted to stellar winds and stellar outflows in a diversity of stars and evolutionary stages, with focus on massive stars. The goal of the school is to educate and train the next generation of researchers in stellar wind theory and in modeling of stellar winds, outflows, and wind-ISM interactions with sophisticated tools. Moreover, the school aims to raise awareness about the importance of winds and mass loss throughout stellar evolution.

International Conference

Extreme Massive Stars, June 2024, Brazil

Massive stars are extreme cosmic engines, enriching their environments with chemically processed material throughout their entire life-time, and triggering star and planet formation. Despite their importance to cosmic evolution, the evolutionary path leading up to the death of massive stars as spectacular supernova explosions or to the formation of gravitational wave sources are most uncertain. One reason is certainly the lack of precise knowledge of the physical mechanisms behind mass-loss and eruptions.

The goal of the Physics of Extreme Massive Stars conference is to bring together scientists working in a range of subjects related to massive star research. It is the final conference of the European funded POEMS collaboration. It will address the processes that trigger mass loss in massive stars during extreme phases of their evolution, the study of the environments of massive stars on small and large scales and their binarity. During the past decade new cutting-edge numerical codes have been developed and used to compute grids of models describing the chemical and dynamical evolution of stars and their winds. At the same time, an avalanche of new data from different observatories using a diversity of observational techniques (both from satellite missions and from ground-based facilities) has been provided to the astronomical community leading to ground-breaking discoveries.
