Here we will list the software packages that you should install on your notebook before arrival to the school. Please check this page regularly for updates. In exceptional cases, limited help with installations can be provided in the afternoon of Sunday, September 3.

Note that our experience is limited to Linux and Mac.

Required Software

  • f77 and/or gfortran compilers


  • Jupyter


  • some program for analysing spectra (plot several spectra together, identify spectral lines, e.g. Specutils


  • topcat


  • ds9


  • Spectroscopy tool of knowledge/preference for the implementation of basic analysis tasks e.g. normalization, measuring line properties, etc. (e.g. IRAF, iSpec)



  • Python (>=2.7) and installed libraries supporting array functions, scientific computing and visualization tasks (numpy, scipy, matplotlib), as well as astroquery (accessing astronomical catalogs) and astropy (tools for astronomy).



  • VStar for time-series visualization and analysis (no installation needed), available for download here

School Program online

Free dinners !

In addition to the Reception on September 3 and the School Dinner on September 13, all participants will have free dinner at the school hotel on September 4-8, and September 11, 12, and 14. Only during the weekend and at the last evening (September 15) everybody is free to organize their dinner on their own.
