One of the by-product of satellite exoplanet surveys was the discovery of very powerful flares at Solar-like stars. And actually even at stars much hotter than the Sun, for which such phenomena were not expected. Olga Maryeva and Petr Neméth from the ASU Stellar Department et al. were monitoring the star HD 36030 with the aim of revealing the origin of the observed eruptions.
High-cadence photometry from satellites such as Kepler, or currently TESS and in the near future PLATO has proven to be a very effective tool for discovering sudden, short-lived brightenings at solar-type stars.
